Port of Corpus Christi Achieves Record-breaking Milestone with 50 Million Tons Moved in Q3 2023

Corpus Christi, TX – The Port of Corpus Christi, one of the gateways for global trade and a significant contributor to the U.S. economy, has reached a new milestone. In Q3 2023, the port’s customers successfully moved more than 50 million tons of goods through the Corpus Christi Ship Channel, marking the first time in its history that such a record-breaking figure has been achieved for a single quarter. This accomplishment is particularly noteworthy as it represents the sixth consecutive quarter of record-breaking achievements for the Port of Corpus Christi.

The remarkable 52 million tons moved in Q3 2023 signifies a substantial 7.7 percent increase from the corresponding period in the previous year. Additionally, it is a remarkable 4.5 percent higher than the previous record, which was set in Q2 2023. The driving force behind this surge in tonnage primarily stems from a notable increase in crude oil exports. The Port of Corpus Christi reported a substantial 4.4 percent increase in crude oil shipments, totaling 32.4 million tons, in comparison to Q2 2023. Furthermore, the port also witnessed slightly elevated volumes in liquefied natural gas (LNG), petroleum products, and agricultural commodities.

During the first nine months of 2023, Port of Corpus Christi customers have effectively moved a grand total of 151.3 million tons through the gateway. This represents a commendable 9.4 percent increase from the equivalent period in 2022. The leading commodities during this period included crude oil, refined products, and LNG.

Kent Britton, Chief Executive Officer for the Port of Corpus Christi, commented on this significant achievement, stating, “This milestone is a testament to the strength of our customers in meeting the continued strong demands of the global energy market. Our team at the Port of Corpus Christi remains committed to the maintenance and expansion of waterway infrastructure to position our customers for continued success.”

In an effort to further enhance the infrastructure and capabilities of the Corpus Christi Ship Channel, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers recently awarded the final contract for the Corpus Christi Ship Channel Improvement Project (CIP) to Callan Marine, Ltd. This project aims to both widen and deepen the channel, facilitating more extensive and efficient maritime operations. The first two phases of the project have already been completed, and the third is estimated to be finished in early 2024. The fourth and final phase of the CIP is projected to reach completion in early 2025.

Charles W. Zahn Jr., Chairman of the Port of Corpus Christi Commission, expressed his appreciation for the collaborative efforts behind the economic prosperity experienced by the Coastal Bend region, stating, “We commend and congratulate our industry partners for the work they’ve done to generate the economic prosperity experienced by the Coastal Bend region. The Port of Corpus Christi will continue to support our customers in their efforts to strengthen and enhance our communities.”

The Port of Corpus Christi’s continued growth and record-breaking achievements underscore its critical role in supporting the global energy market and the economic well-being of the region. As the infrastructure improvements continue, the port is well-positioned for further success and contributions to the nation’s trade and commerce.
