MONTERREY, MEXICO – In a strategic move for long-term growth in the Americas, the LEGO Group has unveiled plans to expand its Monterrey, Mexico factory. Carsten Rasmussen, the Chief Operating Officer at the LEGO Group, highlighted the significance of the Monterrey facility, the largest LEGO manufacturing plant globally, emphasizing its pivotal role in the company’s global network.
The expansion initiative aims to augment packing and warehousing capabilities, aligning with the company’s strategy to establish production facilities in close proximity to major markets. This approach allows for swift responses to shifts in local demand, shortening the supply chain, and minimizing environmental impact.
The forthcoming expansion encompasses the construction of a new packing building, an extension to the existing warehouse, and various supplementary facilities, contributing an expansive 59,000 m2 of operational space. Currently employing over 5,000 personnel, the Monterrey factory anticipates an additional 900 employees during the course of the expansion, reinforcing its position as a significant employer in the region.
Commencing immediately, the expansion project is slated for completion in 2025. Nancy Sanchez, General Manager of LEGO factory Monterrey and Senior Vice President at the LEGO Group, expressed enthusiasm for the expansion, emphasizing the company’s continued investment in Monterrey’s facilities and the positive impact on local employment.
The expansion aligns with the LEGO Group’s sustainability objectives, including a commitment to reducing carbon emissions by 37 percent by 2032. Complementing existing solar panels, the company recently installed a water treatment plant to address the region’s drought conditions, anticipating a monthly reuse of 6,500 m3 of water by February 2024.
This expansion follows the opening of a 33,850 m² expansion at the Monterrey factory in August 2022, featuring a fully automated high-bay warehouse, moulding hall, and processing facility. Monterrey is one of three LEGO Group factories globally engaged in all aspects of LEGO product manufacturing, encompassing moulding, element processing, decoration, and packaging.
Founded in 1932 in Billund, Denmark, the LEGO Group, deriving its name from the Danish words “Leg Godt” meaning “Play Well,” remains a family-owned company headquartered in Billund, with its products available in over 130 countries worldwide.
