ALLISTON, ON, Canada – Honda is gearing up to reintroduce the Honda Civic Hybrid to the Canadian and U.S. markets, with the production slated to begin in 2024. The resurrected model will be manufactured on North American soil.
The production of the 2025 Civic Hybrid will kick off in the spring of 2024 at Honda of Canada Mfg. (HCM) in Alliston, Ontario, which is set to become the lead North American plant for Civic Hybrid production. Shortly after, the hatchback variant will commence production at the Indiana Auto Plant (IAP) in Greensburg, Indiana, a facility already involved in the production of the Honda CR-V Hybrid.
Yoshiyuki Nakazawa, General Manager and Executive Vice President of HCM, expressed great pride in HCM’s role as the lead North American plant for the new Civic Hybrid sedan. He emphasized the historic significance of the plant, which is on the verge of producing its 6 millionth Civic this month. The introduction of the Civic Hybrid aligns with Honda’s global electrification goals as they transition consumers in Canada to an electrified future.
This reintroduction of the Civic Hybrid marks another milestone in Honda’s broader electrification strategy, which revolves around integrating hybrid-electric systems into its core vehicle lineup. In 2023, more than 35% of CR-V and Accord sales have been hybrid-electric trims, and nearly 20% of Honda’s total sales in Canada are electrified models. The automaker anticipates that Civic Hybrid sales will account for over 40% of all Civic sales in North America.
As part of this strategy, Honda has also taken substantial steps in establishing its EV Hub in Ohio. In 2022, the company announced a $700 million investment to retrofit existing auto and powertrain plants to support the production of battery electric vehicles by 2025. The Marysville Auto Plant (MAP), where Honda initiated auto production in the United States in 1982, will transition to EV manufacturing. This EV Hub includes a joint venture EV battery plant established by Honda and LG Energy Solution in Fayette County, Ohio, scheduled for completion by the end of 2024 with an annual production capacity of approximately 40 GWh.
Last year, HCM announced an investment of $1.38 billion over six years to modernize its plants, implement innovative technologies, and develop vehicle research and development programs, all in alignment with Honda’s global electrification and carbon neutrality objectives.
