In a strategic move to enhance efficiency and alleviate congestion at the USA/Mexico border, the Calexico East Port of Entry Bridge Expansion project is underway in Imperial County, approximately one mile south of State Route 7. The $32.5 million initiative, funded by a combination of federal, state, and local contributions, is poised to transform the border-crossing experience.
The primary objective of the project is to widen the bridge near the border, introducing two new northbound truck lanes and two additional northbound regular vehicle lanes. The expansion aims to significantly reduce delays at the border, particularly for commercial traffic. The first phase of the project, involving the widening of the bridge’s east side, is on track for a Fall 2023 opening for commercial traffic.
As part of the comprehensive plan, the northbound pedestrian walkway will undergo substantial improvements, featuring a new canopy to shield pedestrians from the intense desert sun. This enhancement aligns with the project’s commitment to providing a safer and more comfortable crossing experience.
The meticulous planning of the project includes a phased approach to ensure minimal disruption to traffic during construction. The east side expansion, constituting Phase 1, is strategically designed to mitigate traffic impacts and optimize construction costs.
The subsequent phases of the project will encompass the addition of extra passenger lanes and a new pedestrian crossing, ultimately enhancing the overall infrastructure of the Calexico East Port of Entry. The tentative completion date for the entire project is set for early to mid-2024.
To facilitate the additional northbound lanes, the existing northbound pedestrian walkway will be relocated to the west. This adjustment will enable the seamless incorporation of two new northbound passenger vehicle lanes. Furthermore, the project includes the installation of new concrete barriers and minor modifications to existing landscaping, drainage, signage, and lighting.
The financial backing for this transformative initiative includes $20 million in federal funds from the BUILD Grant, covering design, construction, and construction management. State dollars contribute $3 million for the Project Study Report, while $2 million in local funding supports design, construction, and construction management. An additional $7.5 million from the Trade Corridor Enhancement Program (TCEP) Cycle 2 will be allocated for design and construction.
The project timeline highlights the completion of the environmental phase in May 2020, followed by the commencement of design and construction in March 2021. The estimated construction completion is anticipated in the spring of 2024. As the Calexico East Port of Entry Bridge Expansion progresses, it stands as a testament to collaborative efforts aimed at enhancing border infrastructure and facilitating smoother cross-border movements.
