California Suspends Cruise’s Self-Driving Car Operations Over Safety Concerns

The California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has halted Cruise’s self-driving car operations in the state indefinitely due to safety issues. This action follows a recent incident in which a Cruise autonomous vehicle was involved in a collision with a pedestrian in San Francisco.

The DMV stated that when there’s an unreasonable risk to public safety, permits can be suspended without a predetermined duration. Cruise is cooperating with regulators and conducting an analysis to improve vehicle responses to rare events.

Vehicles with human safety drivers will still be permitted to operate. This suspension adds to Cruise’s previous setbacks, including a permit reduction and mishaps involving autonomous vehicles in San Francisco.
